Bottled water is one of the biggest commercial travesties of all time. That’s pretty bad, especially considering it wasn’t even widely available until the late 80s. In a matter of decades, it’s become an industry that poisons billion and wastes global resources – while charging consumers an arm and a leg.
Here are 4 of the most startling reasons we all ought to stay far away from bottled water.
#1 – It’s An Absolute Ripoff
According to Business Insider, the price of bottled water is twice that of gasoline and – brace yourself – 2,000 times that of tap water. In more practical terms, if you were to buy a single bottle of water every day for a year, you’d wind up spending $546.77 more than if you just drank water from your tap.
That would be enough to buy 7 fluoride filters for said tap water.
“Oh, but Aquafina gets their water from fresh springs,” you might be thinking. “That’s what we’re paying for!”
Nope. That’s not how it works. 47.8% of all bottled water, including Aquafina and Nestlé, comes from public sources – the same place as tap water. And now you know how the bottled water industry manages to walk away with upwards of $86 billion in annual profits.
Only the greediest of the greedy could do something like that. Speaking of which…
Do you feel like you’re carrying a bit of extra weight around your thighs? If so, I’ve got plenty of good news for you today! The first point is that it’s totally normal. For most of human history, having extra fat stored was actually helpful – particularly for women of child-bearing age. The thighs became a natural place for this fat to be stored.
Fast forward to the 21st Century and this process is, well, not so helpful. Our diet differs drastically from that of our ancestors. Today, it’s not hard for body fat storage to get out of control – and with extra thigh fat, of course, comes cellulite.
Ready for the second piece of good news?
Fighting thigh fat is far from impossible. Matter-of-fact, follow these three steps and you’ll be well on your way towards slimmer, healthier thighs!
#1 – Fix Your Diet
This might not seem like a thigh-centered change but it will help your body deal with fat better overall, making focused thigh exercises more effective.
#2 – Buying Bottled Water Supports Unethical Companies
Coca-Cola and Nestlé are two of America’s largest bottled water manufacturers. Both have highly unethical business practices.
Coca-Cola spends millions trying to prevent GMO labeling. The company also hogs resources in third-world countries to keep profit margins high. Nestlé earns its rank as one of the most hated countries in the world thanks to its reliance on child labor, pollution and mislabeling.
Are these really the sort of companies you want to be supporting?
#3 – Water Bottles Destroy The Environment
All this plastic doesn’t just disappear.
In America alone, the bottled water industry uses enough fossil fuels annually to keep 1 million automobiles running all year. Don’t see the problem? Well, fossil fuels are responsible for the bulk of earth’s environmental problems.
Worldwide, only 20% of all plastic water bottles get recycled. The rest wind up in landfills, where they take 1,000 years to decompose. As they do decompose, they leak harmful toxins and chemicals into groundwater.
Speaking of toxins and chemicals…
#4 – Water Bottles Are Bad For Your Health
The ‘plastic’ in your standard water bottle is technically called polyethylene terephthalate, or PET for short. PET bottles contain a chemical called antimony. In small doses, antimony can cause dizziness and depression.
Many plastic water bottles also contain BPA – a compound linked to increased obesity, behavioral problems and birth defects. BPA is banned in Canada, but the U.S. and UK continue to allow its use.
