Confidence, hair loss and SMP

Before third session

It has been a while since I discussed my own experience with hair loss. As the moderator of the HIS forum I tend to spend most of my time supporting others, answering questions and giving advice. For this reason it doesn’t feel right to talk about my own situation too often, feels a little self-obsessive somehow. But like I said its been a while, so I guess it’s no problem.

I suppose my story shares a lot of common traits with other clients of HIS. I’m not really sure when I started to lose my hair because I think I was in denial for quite a long time. My best guess is that I was around 24 years old when I first started to notice, but by the time I reached 27 it was really starting to become noticeable, and it was bothering me more and more. I’ve always had a high hairline anyway but it was getting higher, and when I used to spike my hair up I could see more of my scalp through my hair as the months and years passed.

Like many of you, the thought of getting a hair transplant or a hair system never crossed my mind. Hell, at the time I didn’t even know what a hair system was, unless it was referred to as a wig I guess. I had no idea what minoxidil or finasteride were, or what they’re used for. The reality is that if you’re not losing your hair, you don’t make it your business to know. Why would you? I was probably destined to be one of those suckers who buys every miracle shampoo or lotion that claims to make your hair appear thicker, because I didn’t know any different at the time.

This was how my head looked after my second session had time to settle down. I had three full sessions and one small final session in total

Anyway, I used to work for the Trinity Mirror Group, the company that owns the Daily Mirror and a range of other British newspapers. I came to visit HIS Hair Clinic one day on a sales visit and Ian, Ranbir and I just hit it off. A few short months later and I’d left my publishing career behind and I joined HIS as their marketing guy. That was 5 years ago now.

I’d been working for the company for 4 years before I finally decided to have SMP myself last year. Why did it take me so long? Honestly, I don’t know for sure. Perhaps I was still in denial to a certain extent, or maybe even despite working for the company and coming into contact with literally thousands of guys who had it done, I was still looking for the catch. I had all the same concerns as many of you like how it would look years down the line, whether it would suit me or not, and what my family and friends would say. Even after I made the decision to do it, I was still looking for excuses to put it off just a little longer in case the ‘catch’ presented itself to give me an excuse to back out. Sounds ridiculous, I know.

One perk I had as an employee was that I could choose my practitioner, and I chose Simon because he’s the one I knew best and felt most comfortable with. I helped him document his own story, after which we became friends so it was the obvious way to go. That said, I have a huge amount of respect for all the practitioners in Birmingham, so I’d have been happy whoever I was allocated to.

All anxiety and doubt was gone immediately after my first session. The relief is hard to explain. It was partly down to the fact that I knew how much it hurt from then on (which wasn’t too bad anyway), partly because there was no turning back so I had no way of procrastinating any more, and of course because I could see how my new appearance was coming together and I realised I really liked my new look. Honestly, it was an incredible feeling. Sessions 2, 3 and 4 swiftly followed, the pigments settled, and here I am nearly a year later, happy as can be.

The really weird thing is that although I knew losing my hair was getting me down, I didn’t realise how much until after I had it done. It wasn’t so much about getting my hair back, but more about losing the anxiety and confidence issues that come with going bald. I don’t look in the mirror and think ‘wow’ like some people do. For me, the biggest benefit is simply not having to think or worry about it anymore. The issue is gone, and I’ve been able to move on a much happier man.

For those who are interested, I started out using clippers on a zero. Then I moved onto the Wahl Balding Clippers that cut it a little shorter, then to a Remington R655 rotary face shaver. Now I wet shave in the shower every other day. I use a standard facial cleanser to wash my head, I moisturise with HeadBlade Headlube matte and when I need to use sunscreen, I use a light SPF15-25 cream. My personal favourite is Calypso spray, but Nivea Light Feeling is also very good. By far the best results I experience are from wet shaving, and its the only method where I can shave every 2 days rather than every day.

I remember a thread Haircules started a while back. It was all about improving yourself after SMP. More specifically, it was about getting the body you always wanted. That’s next on my agenda. I’ve always been a bit flabby around the edges, but I realise now that I’m just procrastinating like I did before I had SMP.

A cure for baldness?

Baldness Drug Shows Promise And Danger In Fighting Cancer

American scientist may have found a cure for baldness utilizing new stem cell method.

While the cure for hair loss may still be a ways off, researchers believe that they have taken a major step forward towards finding a cure for hair loss, which is estimated to affect approximate-ly 80 million men and women in the US.

In a recent article on the Huffington Post profiling the Southern California research facility Sanform-Burnham Medical Research Institute has begun experimenting with hair growth with mice using stem cell methods — and then have found success.

“The method is a marked improvement over current methods that rely on transplanting existing hair follicles from one part of the head to another,” Dr. Alexey Terskikh, associate professor at the institute and research team member, said in a written statement to the Huffington Post. “Our stem cell method provides an unlimited source of cells from the patient for transplantation and isn’t limited by the availability of existing hair follicles.”

In theory, what Dr. Terskikh is alluding to is the possibility for a patient to regrow an entire head of hair even the patient has nothing to work with (i.e. completely bald). Unlike other procedures such as hair transplants, this stem cell method wouldn’t require a donor area or some amount of hair to work with to get results.

As one can imagine, such a procedure with such results would be a major game changer for millions of people around the world. Dermatologists around the country were contacted for comment and those who responded were in all in agreement about what this could do for the landscape of the industry.

In an email to the Huffington Post, Dr. Nicole Rogers (a dermatologist and hair trans-plant surgeon based in New Orleans) said, ”If this approach is proven to work in hu-mans, it will change existing treatments radically.”

San Francisco dermatologist and clinical instructor at Stanford University Dr. Marie Jhin further the sentiment. In an email with the Huffington Post, she described the stem cell method “…a breakthrough.”

However, Dr. Rogers was optimistically cautious, stating that over the years there have been many different procedures and techniques that have been touted as the break-through procedure to end hair loss. While finding success in hair growth in lab mice is a fine start, the challenge will be if the doctors of Sanford-Burnham can replicate the results with humans.

How does the technique work? Simple: “by exploiting the ability of the human pluripo-tent stem cells to turn into almost any other cells in the body.” Dr. Tershikh and his team members are manipulating these cells into dermal papilla cells that control the formation and growth of one’s hair follicles. When this has been done with the mice, the result is hair growth. This method, again in theory, is superior to the conventional hair transplant because during a hair transplant procedure not enough necessary dermal papilla cells can be collected and transplanted.

As research is ongoing, there isn’t a fixed timeline for when such a procedure would be available to the public. For now, the research team is continuing their study and looking for additional funding.

A paper describing the research was published Jan. 21, 2015 in the journal PLOS One.

Smarter Snacking

burger

Could what you snack on play a vital role in preserving your hair?

We’ve all heard the saying, “you are what you eat.” The meaning that what you put in your body directly correlates with what you get out.

With that in mind, what you eat could play a very important role in preserving your hair. Just like stress, genetics, and drugs can have their affect on hair, one’s diet can play a role in one’s hair health. The George Washington School of Medicine points out that ‘virtually every nutritional deficiency can affect the death of our hair, skin and nails, in some manner.’ So what these wonder foods? Check out the list below:

Fish

– Not just any fish, but cold water fish like salmon, sardines, trough, mackerel, herring and eel are packed with protein, iron an, and fatty acids like omega-3 and 6, which are vital to your hair’s health. The University of Maryland Medical center said that the essential fatty acids stimulate hair growth.

Lean Animal Protein

– Not all animal meat is created the same, so what we’re talking about here is specifically is poultry. Beyond the obvious protein advantage, poultry is rich with iron that is very ‘bio-available’ — which means that it’s absorbed by the body better. But makes sure the chicken isn deep fried. That, unfortunately, defeats the purpose.

Oysters and Shellfish

– Did you know: when our bodies don’t get enough zinc, it will take it from our hair, leaving our hair brittle. When this happens, it’s even possible for this to result in impeding the hair’s growth. Oysters are rich with zinc, along with iron and protein. So post up at the oyster bar and make it a dozen.

Seeds

– Bird food? That’s right. Feathers have similar properties to hair and nails, and birds’ diet is heavy on the seeds, so researchers recommend adding seeds like black sesame, sunflower, flax, chia, and pumpkin to your diet. Weather eating a handful raw or sprinkling on them on your salad, oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal, or adding them to your bread or trail mix, adding seeds to your food helps increase the proteins necessary for strong hair, nails, and skin.

Nuts

– Along the same line as seeds, nuts are an awesome source of essential fatty acids and contain high levels of zinc and selenium, which are important to developing healthy scalp tissue. Past research has linked zinc deficiency and hair shedding. So a serving of nuts daily can have a big impact on your hair’s health.

Dark Greens

– Vegetables like broccoli, kale, and spinach are loaded with vitamin A, calcium, and iron, both essential for the production of the oils that condition and strengthen hair.

Eggs

– The classic morning breakfast food. Several years ago studies undergone by University of Bologna and George Washington School of Medicine discovered vitamin B-7 (aka, biotin) in the yoke of the egg. Biotin plays a major role increasing hair’s thickness and helps prevent brittleness.

Beans

– Hair follicles contain up to 100 different proteins. Australian University of Adelaide say the key to healthy strong hair is protein. And beans are not only loaded with protein, but packed with vitamins such as iron, zinc, b-complex vitamins such as B-12 and the aforementioned B-7. Great option for vegetarians. Studies have even shown that these vitamins can even reverse graying.

Whole Grains

– Grains like whole wheat, brown rice, barley, oats, quinoa, millet and spelt have plenty of fiber and B vitamins along with vitamins like iron, zinc, and silica. What’s silica? Silica has been called the ‘beauty mineral’. University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy conducted a study with women who were given 10 mg of silica per day for nine months and discovered that the women participating had thicker, stronger hair.

Turmeric

– The super spice. Turmeric is made from an east-Asian plan and has been used in local medicine for centuries. Turmeric fires up the body’s natural steroids and corticosteroids, which reduces inflammation. Studies conducted by research labs in Korea suggest that turmeric can promotes hair growth by blocking the hormones responsible for hair loss.

Look to add any combinations these foods to your diet to improve your chances of gaining and maintaining your hair.

How to Get Rid of Acne Scars | Home Remedies for Acne Scars - EbestProducts

Bald jokes are history as comedian has scalp micropigmentation

Frankie Allen started losing his hair when he was twenty-five years old. It has been very traumatic for him and he has not really found any balding solution to replicate his hair growth. By this time, his vertex area was already quite bald while his frontal region was noticeably thin. He has tried all the approved medications by the Food and Drug Administration but to no avail. Allen has also observed how varied the results of hair transplant surgery can be. The scarring that could result ultimately turned him away from using the method.

He felt fortunate that he heard about scalp micropigmentation. Frankie did some research by seeing and speaking with people who have actually done it. He thought that it looked fantastic. A stand-up comedian by profession, he shares that he always involves the crowd in his acts. He jokingly makes fun of them though he says that it would be difficult to pick on those who are balding or look elderly because he appears the same way. Allen feels that scalp micropigmentation was the right step for him in the opposite direction.

There was a good chance that he might have only needed two sessions to complete the entire procedure. Frankie was however invited for another one just to make further refinements to his overall hair pattern. He wanted it to look slightly receding at the hairline, making it appear as authentic as possible to match his age. A full head of hair that displayed a trendy “just-shaved” style was what he was going for. Allen believed that this method would not only free him from worry but it will also rejuvenate his appearance.

After completing his three sessions, Frankie shared a few tidbits about the process. Each took three to four hours to complete, which were at times a bit painful but nothing too uncomfortable. With every week that went by he noticed an obvious change. By the time the last session was over, people were just simply amazed at the way he looked. Allen says that scalp micropigmentation is one hundred percent undetectable and has radically changed his life.

He observed how marvelous the people at HIS Hair Clinic were to him. They were very affable and caused him to feel quite at home. The atmosphere at the facility was quite good and relaxed. He was just full of appreciation for the staff and the incredible procedure that was completed for him. Frankie thinks that scalp micropigmentation has been the answer to his prayers. He never has to worry about his hair ever again.

His advice to anybody who is thinking of dropping by the clinic is to just go. It would be best to see the practitioners to receive a free consultation. They are very friendly and go out of their way to help out with any particular requests. The staff will be happy to provide assistance for any type of hair loss. Most importantly, Allen never felt pressured to get scalp micropigmentation. He made up his own mind by taking a chance on the treatment. In the end, he is glad he did because he is absolutely amazed by the results.

Make hair loss a thing of the past with scalp micropigmentation

Andy started experiencing balding in his early twenties. He noticed he was losing his hair when it started thinning at the top. This was something his friends would constantly tease him about it. He simply thought that he was too young to go bald and it has just been a constant thing on his mind. Andy wore his hair short in an effort to reduce its obviousness. Its image would continue to plague him however whenever he looked in the mirror. Now at thirty-four years of age, he made up his mind to change his present situation to make sure that he would no longer be bald at any age.

Scalp micropigmentation was actually something that was recommended by a friend of his. He went online and was amazed at what he saw. Andy thought that it looked really good. His friend initially told him that it would be similar to getting a tattoo. This was something that he could not visualize at first. After seeing the website, he saw images there that displayed what it was all about. It looked very natural which caused Andy to follow up his interest in it. This was exactly the way he wanted his treatment to appear.

His alopecia was basically a case of receding at the temporal regions and very noticeable balding in the crown area. He had two sessions where his hairline was brought down and had his vertex region filled-in. Andy described the treatment as going really well despite some medium level pain. It was nothing however that he could not manage. He says that it only took about three hours for each session and was relatively comfortable all throughout.

Andy shares that viewing himself in the mirror is more of a pleasant experience now. He likes seeing his new hairline and is mindful that he has to care for his scalp micropigmentation. Shaving his head every couple of days would keep the integrity of his overall appearance. In addition, regularly washing the scalp and keeping it properly moisturized can prolong the effects of his treatment.

The final outcome was something that he could not visualize after his first session. He actually felt a bit doubtful that it could really match what he saw online. His next session however resulted in the pigments to appear darker. It started to settle-in and fade causing it to blend in together. There was some marked redness after each session but it was nothing that lasted beyond a few days.

Andy’s advice for those who are really thinking about getting treated is to just go for it. He understands the indecision at the start because it is indeed a big step for anyone to do. His fears were unfounded however because he now says that it has been the best treatment he received after a long time. He is really happy with the results and believes that people should try it out. His alopecia has become a thing of the past thanks to scalp micropigmentation.

Hiding alopecia using scalp micropigmentation

chris alopecia treatment

There are many types of hair loss that can possibly plague a person’s scalp. Androgenic alopecia is by far the most common, consisting of up to ninety percent of all cases reported.

The other occurrences take up what remains. They might not be as rampant as pattern baldness though they are just as noticeable. Some might even be considered more obvious than others. Take alopecia areata for example. It is an autoimmune condition that can manifest itself without warning. Stress is thought to be the reason why this kind of hair loss occurs. There are however no data confirming such claim. This appears randomly throughout the scalp appearing as round, bald patches of skin. It can come and go without warning often causing anxiety in the process. Worse, this can progress to a more severe condition called alopecia totalis or the loss of hair over the entire head.

Telogen effluvium is another balding condition that can be caused by stress. This has more established evidence due to how the scalp reacts a few months after the traumatic condition. Such instances are divorce, death of a loved one, major surgery or childbirth. The effect is on hair is that it is shed in clumps in different parts of the scalp without really following a set pattern. The reason why this occurs is due to the rapid shift between the anagen and telogen hair growth cycles. It creates a longer resting phase that causes hair density to thin in a particular area of the scalp.

Other forms of alopecia can be caused by infection, illness or even medication. These can be remedied by addressing the reason why it came about however there are times when they are necessary. Medication such as chemotherapy has to be used despite the resulting hair loss. For this reason, a patient might want to use a remedy prior to receiving treatment for his illness. The best way to do this is through scalp micropigmentation.

Using this treatment for hair loss is fast becoming the first option among the different remedies available. It is so dynamic that it can completely disregard the current stage that a balding condition is presently engaged in. Another good thing about scalp micropigmentation is its fast recovery period. Patients might notice some redness over the treated area immediately after every session. They will quickly find out however that this can disappear in a matter of two to three days. The pigments itself will already be quite visible. It just needs a minimum of seven days to be able to completely settle into the scalp and fade.

Scalp micropigmentation provides a semblance of hair to a balding scalp. It may be used in two ways either through a “just-shaved” style or coupled with the client’s existing hair. The former method is very simple to maintain. A patient just needs to make sure that his scalp is always clean and moisturized. He also has to mindful of his existing hair that could still grow despite having received treatment. This might cause the hair design to lose the uniformity of its appearance. The client simply has to shave it off every couple of days or so to prevent this from happening.

Using scalp micropigmentation to increase the density of a patient’s existing hair is likewise effective though can only be implemented after satisfying two prerequisites. The first is that the hairline should still be intact. Pigments would be extremely noticeable if they are fully exposed in the temporal and frontal regions of the scalp due to their two-dimensional nature. The second requirement is that the client should only have diffuse thinning in the vertex area. This follows the same logic as the first prerequisite. The existing hair and the pigments should be able to mix together in relatively proportional proximity to avoid discovery. Having them set in noticeable clusters will not do any good. It is better to just use the “just-shaved” style if the existing hair cannot provide an adequate amount of coverage.

Why Does a Hair Transplant Cost What It Costs and Why?

Unlike a cosmetic product, object of clothing or an excursion, the service somebody receives from a hair transplant gives lifelong, permanent results. So, first of all the cost required could, and should be thought of as a long term investment. Since you are looking for something “cheap”, then that would be my advice to reconcile the costs.

Secondly, if you’re concerned that you’ll somehow be overcharged, then I suggest that you stick with a reputable doctor in the US who has good references. There should be a onetime charge for the procedure and you shouldn’t be obligated to pay for any ancillary products or follow –up appointments. Some doctors may appropriately charge for the initial consultation.

You’re advised to do some shopping around, and once you have a sense for the fair market price in your area, then make a decision. At this point, if your budget does not allow for a full priced procedure, then you’re smart to save the money until you can afford it. No decent hair doctor wants to give you a discount, and if you force his hand, then you’re truly risking “cheap” results.

Because, if you’re looking for something “cheap”, then you may just find that. Remember, you’re talking about your appearance and your health. By the way of analogy, if you want a cheap car, then try to find one with 200,000 miles or higher. You understand the risks that it will breakdown, and you’ll either be left stranded or forced to pay repair costs. That is the risk you are taking with a car. With a hair transplant, you’re risking having a permanent, unsightly result. Or even worse, you may have an uncomfortable or procedure which is risky to your health. I’m sure you’ll be able to find that type of work-like any industry it is out there available for bargain shoppers. I understand some people don’t really place a high value on themselves and continue bargain hunting when it comes to plastic surgery. This mentality implies shortcuts and low quality and when it comes to hair transplant or any other type of plastic or cosmetic surgery, this type of thinking should be avoided by both the consumer and physician.

A Review of Advances In Understanding & Treating Male & Female Androgenetic Alopecia

In a recent (2014) literature review, “Regenerative Medicine And Hair Loss: How Hair Follicle Culture Has Advanced Our Understanding Of Treatment Options For Androgenetic Alopecia” (Regen Med. 2014 Jan;9(1):101-11), Dr. Claire Higgins and Dr. Angela Christiano, both in the Department of Dermatology at Columbia University, reveal how current culture techniques are leading to better treatment options for male and female patient with androgenetic alopecia type hair loss.

What is Androgenetic Alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary disease where a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) acts on genetically-susceptible scalp hair follicles in two ways:

  1. Susceptible hair follicles enter into progressively longer periods of their telogen (resting) phase relative to their anagen (hair growth) phase, and this causes hair shafts to become progressively smaller.
  2. Susceptible hair follicles progressively shrink (miniaturize) producing shorter and finer hairs that eventually disappear altogether.

New Drug Development for Androgenetic Alopecia

Since the early 1990’s, researchers have been able to study isolated hair follicles using cell culture techniques. These techniques have opened the door to better treatment options for androgenetic alopecia by using medications to interrupt the effects of DHT on genetically-susceptible follicles.

For example, hair follicles grown in a serum-free medium supplemented with insulin and hydrocortisone will reliably shift from their growth phase (anagen) to their telogen (resting) phase after a few days; this allows researchers to test new drug biologics to see how effective they are in delaying this shift. Prematurely shifting hair into telogen is one of the ways DHT causes hair loss in androgenetic alopecia; such tests could lead to the development of new and better drugs which interrupt this specific effect of DHT on susceptible follicles.

More recently, researchers have been able to grow intermediate hair follicles to model the miniaturization of genetically-susceptible hair follicles. This could lead to the development of new drugs which effectively interrupt the shrinking of DHT susceptible follicles.

Better Existing Drug Understanding & New Drug Discoveries for Androgenetic Alopecia

Minoxidil is currently the most widely used treatment for both male and female pattern baldness. However, its effectiveness varies from patient to patient. There are two competing hypotheses explaining this variability: minoxidil either works on the microenvironment surrounding the hair follicle by increasing the blood flow surrounding the follicle or it acts directly on the hair follicle to promote hair growth.

Recent research using hair follicle organ cultures supports the latter hypothesis: the best recent evidence indicates that minoxidil acts directly on the follicle by opening ATP sensitive potassium channels within the dermal papilla to both initiate and drive the anagen (growth) phase of the follicle’s hair cycle. This new understanding of minoxidil’s mechanism of action could lead to the discovery of better growth inducing drug biologics that act directly on the follicle.

Finasteride is also a highly successful drug treatment for androgenetic alopecia, but it is only approved for men because of the risk of birth defects in women. Because of this, minoxidil remains currently the only FDA approved treatment for women.

However, in 2010, researchers discovered that a prostamide F2α-related analog called bimatoprost, a drug used to treat glaucoma, caused eyelash growth as a side effect. After discovering prostanoid receptors inside the dermal papilla of hair follicles, researchers used follicle organ cultures to see if bimatoprost could stimulate hair growth. These cultures found that bimatoprost did significantly enhance hair growth.

While clinical trials evaluating bimatoprost in women with female pattern hair loss are currently ongoing, preliminary finding suggest that F2α analogs could become an effective drug treatment.

Neogenesis of Hair Follicle Promises More Widely Available Hair Transplants

It is known that dermal papilla cells taken from existing hair follicles and injected back into the skin can cause the growth of new hair follicles at the site of the injection, a phenomena known as “follicular neogenesis.” Because of this hair inducing capacity, it is logical to assume that by expanding (cloning) dermal papilla cells in culture, one would be able to inject new dermal papilla cells into the frontal or balding part of the scalp where they can then either induce new hair follicle growth or reverse miniaturization of DHT sensitive hair follicles.

Unfortunately, in culture, new dermal papilla cells quickly lose their ability to create new hair follicles. One theory explaining why this happens is that in a petri-dish culture, dermal papilla cells grow flat (i.e. on a two dimensional plane) and are cut off from critical growth signals normally present in their natural 3-D environment.

In a test of this theory, Dr. Angela M. Christiano devised a way to grow dermal papillae cells in a three dimensional culture rather than in a conventional two dimensional tissue culture. She reasoned that if the intrinsic signaling could be restored in such 3-D cultures, the human dermal papilla cells should recover their ability to create new hair follicles. And this is exactly what she found.

According to Dr. Christiano, this discovery represents a major breakthrough in being able to create new follicles, rather than merely moving a limited number of existing follicles from one part of the scalp to another (as is currently done in hair transplantation).

Being able to induce new human hair growth from cloned human papillae could significantly expand the use of hair transplantation to women with hair loss, who tend to have insufficient donor hair, as well as to men in early stages of baldness.

David’s Case Study

By admin

After suffering from male pattern baldness and losing his hair in his 20’s, David Richards undergoes Scalp MicroPigmentation treatment at the His Hair Clinic on Harley Street in London.

“The hair loss I experienced was on the top of my head, at the back and the front, which I think affects a lot of men.

I still had hair at the sides, but I felt my baldness aged me quite a lot. So I basically went for a full treatment on the top of my head, because I was very bald in that area. I had three treatments in total, with the final one about 10 days ago. And the results are astronomical – it’s a huge difference! People have told me I look much younger and I personally feel so different in myself, euphoric even. I no longer worry about people seeing me as a bald man. For me, this is an absolutely invaluable treatment.”

Can scalp micropigmentation help camouflage hair transplant scars?

By admin

scar

Treatment for a balding condition is quite possible through the use of any of the proven methods available. There are of course different types of hair loss that require a more appropriate remedy. Some might not work as well as others. It is highly recommended to seek professional assistance before proceeding with treatment. Symptoms might obviously point toward a particular kind of alopecia however it would be more prudent to have it first confirmed by an expert in the field.

Hair transplant surgery for example, is more appropriately used for androgenic alopecia. This is because it requires an established area where healthy hair follicles may be extracted. These “donor” units of hair should come from the lower sides and back of the scalp because it is the location that would most likely remain intact after the male pattern baldness has run its full course. Taking hair follicles from this area whether through the use of follicular unit extraction or follicular unit transplantation would most likely cause scarring. It might not be obvious when hair is worn long however it can be extremely noticeable when it is cut short.

Scalp micropigmentation can be considered as one of the most dynamic treatments available to address hair loss. It can be implemented on almost any balding condition. Consulting with a qualified physician before treatment is still recommended if only to determine the kind of hair loss being exhibited by the patient. The diagnosis however will not significantly influence its use. Scalp micropigmentation does not try to slow down or reverse hair loss. It is only meant to conceal it. This is where the true strength of the procedure lies.

Combining scalp micropigmentation with post hair transplant surgery is nothing new. Patients of the latter usually seek the use of the former to camouflage their scars. Pigments are layered over this area to help it blend in with existing hair. The coverage however must not be limited to the scar. It should extend a few inches beyond it to create a smoother appearance. Note that scars despite treatment could easily be detected against a certain amount of hair growth around it as opposed to a cropped hairstyle for example. Pigments are two-dimensional while actual hair is three-dimensional. Any exposed areas can still be noticeable despite being treated with scalp micropigmentation when the disparity between the two is obvious.

The scar itself should not appear to be raised or have a reddish color. These characteristics would make its appearance obvious. Employing the use of Fraxel laser technology might be a better move before subjecting the scar to scalp micropigmentation. Fraxel allows the scar to be smoothened out to a more manageable degree. Having it covered with longer hair can of course, instantly camouflages a hair transplant scar. The challenge comes when the patient wants to wear his hair short. This is where the scar needs to be worked on in order that it appears as flat and colorless as possible.

Camouflaging hair transplant scars is just one among the many uses of scalp micropigmentation. Demand is actually quite high for a “just-shaven” hair pattern. It is the most manageable type only requiring that the patient maintain his existing hair quite short. This creates uniformity with the hair design allowing the two-dimensional pigments to remain anonymous. The other type of scalp micropigmentation is used to increase the hair density of actual hair. There are two prerequisites however before this may be implemented. The first is that the hairline should not have receded. Another condition is that the balding condition being exhibited is limited to diffuse thinning.

Have You Ever Considered an Eyelash Transplant?

Long, full lashes are becoming more and more sought after these days, and techniques such as eyelash extensions are growing in popularity. A prescription medication, Latisse, is even available for those desiring eyelash augmentation. But what if you could make those lengthy lashes permanent without the use of medication or cosmetics?

Eyelashes serve both anatomical and aesthetic functions. On a functional level, they shield and protect the eye, preventing debris from entering and causing infection; however, they also help frame the face, along with the eyebrows, adding visual appeal. Women are forever trying to make their eyelashes appear longer and thicker with the application of cosmetics. New and improved mascaras are consistently marketed, targeting women’s desires to be more beautiful. With an eyelash transplant, this desire can become reality, but before undergoing surgery, even a minor one, you may first want to become informed on such a procedure.

Eyelash transplants originally arose due to patient need as a result of trauma, congenital atrichia (absence of hair in all areas), and trichotillomania (a compulsive hair plucking disorder). However, in a society that is increasingly concerned with physical appearances, eyelash transplants for mere aesthetic purposes could become more popular, at least for those who can afford them. A single procedure could cost you anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. A typical procedure lasts from 1 to 3 hours, and depending upon desired results, most patients require 1 to 3 sessions.

Donor hair for an eyelash transplant should be taken from an area where the hair most closely matches that naturally found on the eyelid. It is commonly taken from the nape of the neck or the area above or behind the ears. However, eyebrow and leg hair have also been used. The recovery period lasts 1 to 2 weeks. Patients may experience some itching in the transplanted area for 1 to 2 days following surgery. If itching persists, it could be indicative of a more serious problem. Patients must wear goggles while sleeping to avoid rubbing or scratching the eyes, which could lead to complications. Eyelashes must be coated with eyelash oil, and curled and trimmed regularly. As with any hair transplant, side effects are possible. Graft displacement, ingrown hairs, and changes in the eyelid itself could occur.

Patients should consider all aspects of eyelash transplants before committing to the procedure. Some may jump at the opportunity to enjoy the lasting benefits of a transplant, while others are content with the non-surgical approaches to lengthier lashes.

Questions Regarding FUE Hair Transplant Results

For Norwood type 3 baldness pattern I have been advised 2000 grafts through strip. Are strip results better or should I get FUE. My consulting surgeon is doing manual FUE Hair Transplant. Isn’t that risky? As far as I know it will be causing more hairs damage and lesser density. Am I right. Are there any limitations after strip for heavy exercise? I do gym!

Both types of surgery have advantages and disadvantages. The most important thing you should do at this point is decide what you want from your hair transplant procedure. Follicular unit extraction (FUE Hair Transplant) can be performed manually or with the Powered Cole Isolation Device (PCID). Both offer low transection rate, are minimally invasive, and offer minimal depth extraction. A low transection rate is key to a successful transplant. FUE maximizes donor hair, allowing surgeons to choose optimal follicular units and create a natural look. The Cole Isolation Technique (CIT) FUE, provides more hairs per graft than does strip surgery. C2G or non-shaven CIT allows patients the option to leave their heads unshaven during the transplant procedure. Patients can return immediately to work following this procedure without anyone knowing he has undergone hair transplant surgery. Advantages of CIT FUE include faster recovery, no stitches or sutures, and no linear scar. Strip surgery is performed by removing a strip of hair from the back or side of scalp and harvesting grafts from this strip. The strip is then sewn together. While the width of the scar is unpredictable, most skilled surgeons can keep the scar around ½ cm or less. Strip surgery is less time consuming that CIT FUE, and is therefore less expensive. If you are looking to have a large number of grafts placed in a short amount of time, strip surgery may be the most suitable option for you. With strip surgery, you will need to keep you hair longer to disguise the linear scar. Depending on how you wish to style your hair before and after the procedure could dictate the type of surgery right for you. Recovery time following strip procedure is generally around 2 weeks, while FUE recovery time is around 7 days or less.

Hair Loss in Pregnancy: A Temporary Issue

Approximately 40 percent of pregnant women complain of thinning hair or hair loss over the course of their pregnancies, and in the 2 to 3 months that follow delivery. Here is the good news: Its usually temporary and your hair will grow back!

While some pregnant women may actually see an improvement in the thickness and shininess of their hair due to an increase in estrogen and as a side effect of prenatal vitamins, there are many reasons others experience the opposite.

First, hormonal changes cause a sudden shift in the levels of estrogen and progesterone your body is producing during pregnancy and for a period of time after delivery. A surge in progesterone can have a drying effect on your hair causing it to become brittle and break easier. So it’s important you keep your hair moisturized throughout your pregnancy.

The function of your thyroid gland can also change after pregnancy, and low levels of thyroid hormones can lead to hair loss. Have your doctor check your thyroid hormone levels after you deliver because this issue can be easily fixed with certain medications.

Hair Loss in Pregnancy

Mineral deficiencies can also wreak havoc on your hair. A physiological anemia occurs during pregnancy that can leave many women iron deficient, potentially leading to hair loss. So make sure you stay on an iron supplement even after your pregnancy to help balance out your levels. Many women often lack sufficient amounts of magnesium and zinc as well. Your levels of these vitamins can easily be checked by your doctor and supplemented, if necessary.

Vitamin deficiencies can also contribute to your thinning locks. Many new moms find they are low on vitamin B complex after childbirth. This can again be supplemented, but eating a balanced diet rich in natural oils, complex carbohydrates and protein can help. These nutrients are essential for maintaining good cellular growth, which can lead to healthier hair follicles.

There are certain foods — which I call hair-growth superfoods (though they certainly have not worked on me!) — that can improve the health of your hair. Those include sweet potatoes, which are chock full of nourishing caroteins; French beans, which count vitamins A and B among their nutritional arsenal; as well as garlic and tomatoes.

If hair loss is a problem that seems to be sticking around, you should check in with your dermatologist since there may be other factors which need to be more carefully considered.

Shampoos help with hair loss and balding

In fact, 2/3 of American men will experience some sort of hair loss by the time they are 35, according to the American Hair Loss Association.

Male pattern baldness, which is inherited genetically, is the major cause for hair loss (although stress and illness can also be the reason).

So far, no cure has been found to stop hair loss completely, but there have been some innovations in trying to minimize the effects of male pattern baldness.

We have picked out our 6 favorite shampoos for men and women that may help fight against some hair loss. All were highly rated by reviewers. Check them out below.

These three shampoos are for people in the early stages of hair loss: your hair is starting to thin out, but you are not quite balding yet. These shampoos may help prevent further hair loss, thicken the hair that you do have, and keep your scalp healthy.

Harmful Affects of Hair Dyeing

Scarcely a week passes but I receive questions concerning the hair. Sorrowfully come the lamentations “My hair is falling out” ” My hair is getting thin.” ” Can you tell me how to make my hair grow ? I cut it regularly but it does no good.” One correspondent flatters me thus—” My hair comes out in handfuls. I have been to nearly every doctor in Melbourne, and they have done me no good, now I ask you to help me.” What touching faith. All ,the medical men have failed ignominiously, and so she comes to me to heal her, and I cannot, all I can do is to give some useful hints from which I trust she may derive a certain amount of benefit.

Let me begin by stating that many diseases of the hair can never be cured. Some are within the reach of treatment, and a few may be managed by a little care and attention, if the sufferer will but carry out a few simple remedies.

The most common affection, known is termed “alopecia” or loss of hair. This may occur in patches or by a general thinning out. Now before any remedy can be suggested it is first of all absolutely necessary to know the circumstances under which the hair has been lost. And at this point let me relate an anecdote, which may act as a warning to many.

A lady of fashion, very handsome and elegant, preserved her beauty to a very late age. At 55 her figure was still slender and supple, her walk light, her hair fair, her complexion fresh. These last two were, however, due to art. She was immensely admired, for so skilful was she that many declared that she was still young, and that her hair and complexion owed nothing to art. But quite suddenly her health broke down, she had horrible pains in her head, and in a few weeks’ time she lost her eye sight to such an extent that no spectacles availed, and she could not go out unaccompanied. Then she became so bad with violent headaches that she had to keep her room.

In a few week’s time what a change had taken place! a seemingly young and charming woman had lapsed into an old, blind, decrepit creature, with hair as white as snow. The unhappy woman aged long before her proper time, confessed that her doctor had told her that her lost eyesight and pain-racked head were entirely due to the tons of dye she had been using for years, both for her hair and eyebrows.

Repentance came too late. Relinquishing the use of the dye stopped the pains in her head, but her eyesight had gone for ever. And, be it remembered, this is not by any means an isolated case. It is, unfortunately, a type of thousands, and it is a fact that there is hardly a woman who uses dye who does not bitterly regret the day she commenced. Surely there can be no greater folly, no greater madness, than, with the powerful ingredients contained in hair dyes,to injure the scalp of the head, which covers the most delicate and sensitive organ in the whole human frame.

This is not the worst. Hair dyeing is progressive; once the first fatal step is taken retreat is impossible. The dye has to be constantly renewed and the quantity increased, or else the hair would turn a horribly unnatural color. The new hair growing every day has to be taken care of, and colored to match the other. The habit cannot be discontinued, because the original color has been destroyed. There is only one way out of the difficulty, and that is to shave the head and wear a wig, or go into retirement until the hair has grown sufficiently.

Harmful Affects of Hair Dyeing

The first law for the health of the hair is cleanliness. This is the greatest of all restorers, and under this head must be included washing, combing, shampooing, and efficient brushing. Soap and water are most beneficial to it, and the washes and pomades used are not absolutely harmful. The serpent lurks in the reviver and dyes. Shun these as you would a pestilence. You cannot dye your hair so that it will deceive anyone. The woman who paints her face and dyes her hair does so at her peril, and it is seen plainly by even the most casual observer.

There are many recipes extant which are said to be useful in promoting the growth of the hair. Tincture of canthorides is one. Castor oil pomade was once approved by many, but objections to it have been discovered. Spermaceti and oil of almonds melted together make a useful unguent. Rosemary is an excellent hair wash. It is made thus:— Boil one pound in two quarts of water, filter through blotting paper, add one ounce of spirit of lavender and a quarter of an ounce of Naples soap or salt of tartar. Bay rum has much to recommend it, and is sold, like the rosemary wash, ready for use. Camphor and borax combined will also produce an excellent wash.

The more the head is brushed the healthier it will make the skin. If we wish our daughters to have good heads of hair when they grow up we should teach them to brush it well and often, and to wash it at least once a fortnight, even in the very coldest weather. One teaspoonful of liquid ammonia to a pint of warm water makes a wash that may be used every day with perfect safety. Sometimes, owing to ill health, the hair is apt to become brittle and dry. A little good vegetable oil rubbed well into the roots will be found most beneficial in this case. Avoid animal pomades, as they turn rancid, and send forth a very unpleasant odor. Lately a preparation made from petroleum has come into use, and a very valuable agent it is for assisting to remedy the texture of the hair.

Baldness in patches is a source of great annoyance, especially to women. This is said, by good authorities, to arise from the nerves that supply the skin becoming disordered. The bare spots have the appearance of ringworm, and it is recommended that the spots thus laid bare should be well brushed night and morning with a soft tooth-brush dipped in distilled vinegar. Dressing the hair too tightly is another fruitful cause of its falling out. You may depend upon it nature knows best, and which ever way she intended it to lie let it, even humor it in that direction. If you will persist in dragging it another way do not complain if you suffer from headaches. Do not fasten it up too tightly with the hairpins, because by so doing you stop the free flow of the sap through the tubes, and a consequent loss of nourishing power will be the result.

About cutting. There is no need to have this done by a hairdresser, because all that is wanted is to snip off the forked ends every month or six weeks with a sharp pair of scissors. A good preparation for the hair when it has a tendency to thinness is—Bicarbonate of Soda one dram, distilled water two tablespoonfuls, to be rubbed into the scalp at the roots of the hair.

Do not expect immediate results, patience and perseverance are quite as necessary as the unguent itself. Dandruff is an affection of the cuticle of the scalp, and when not very obstinate, may be treated by the daily use of the tepid bath, and by applying Goulard water, or a solution of borax in rose water (30 grains to half a pint of water). Very obstinate cases require sulfurous baths, change of air, and the daily use of a lotion containing 10 grains of bi-chloride of mercury in half a pint of spirits of wine.

Male Pattern Baldness Cure

Male pattern baldness is such a common phenomenon that many people consider it to be a normal part of aging. However, just because male pattern hair loss is common and somewhat predictable it does not mean it is easy to accept. Although we do not really need hair for ultraviolet light protection and insulation the way our ancestors did, we seem to need it for our sense of self-esteem. Since time immemorial, humankind has been dreaming up magic potions, from bear fat to viper broth, in a desperate attempt to stop hair loss.

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. With male pattern hair loss, your hair begins to thin at the temples and at the crow. As time goes on, the hair at the temples recedes further, leaving a central spur of hair at the front, and an increasing bald spot at the crown. Eventually the areas of hair loss at the front and crown meet, and the top of the head becomes increasingly bald. Then, all that remains is a border of hair around the side and back of the head.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia, is an inherited condition, caused by a genetically determined sensitivity to the effects of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT is believed to shorten the growth phase of the hair cycle, causing miniaturization of the follicles, and producing progressively finer hairs. The production of DHT is regulated by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.

baldness cure

Hair loss can also be caused by a wide range of factors, from mechanical damage to skin infections. It is essential to consult a doctor to determine the exact cause of hair loss.

Are there other types of hair loss? Other types of hair loss include:

Alopecia areata

Characterized by circumscribed, non-scarring hair loss in one or more areas of the body, often due to an autoimmune process.

Telogen effluvium

Heavy, short-term shedding of hair due to a disturbance of the hair cycle in which hair prematurely leaves the growing phase (anagen) and enters the resting phase (telogen).

Traction alopecia

Hair loss due to prolonged traction on the hair such as too tight hair styling.

Anagen effluvium

Significant acute hair loss most commonly caused by chemotherapy or radiation.

Scarring alopecia

Localized permanent damage to hair follicles and accompanying hair loss with a variety of causes including fungal infections, inflammation, burns and trauma.

What is the hair growth cycle?

All hair follicles are replaced at different rates by the normal process of hair cycling. Hair growth alternates between phases of activity and rest. The growth period, called the anagen phase, lasts for two to six years. During this time, the follicle is long and deep, and produces thick, well-pigmented hair. About 90% of all scalp hairs are in the anagen phase at a given time.

This is followed by a brief transition period known as the catagen phase, which last a few weeks. During this time, the base of the follicle shrivels. The resting period, or telogen phase, lasts for two to four months. In his phase, the follicle withers even further. Following the telogen phase, the next anagen phase begins, and the old hair is dislodged and falls out to make room for a new hair to begin growing in its place.

How widespread is male pattern hair loss?

Male pattern hair loss affects approximately 50% of men at some point in their lives. It affects different populations at different rates, probably because of genetics. Up to half of male Caucasians will experience some degree of hair loss by age 60, while other population groups such as Japanese and Chinese men are far less affected.

male pattern baldness cure

How is Hair Loss Diagnosed?

If you feel you are losing hair at a faster rate than usual, or if you notice a thinning or decrease in the number of hairs in a fixed area, a thinning of the hair shafts, or any combination of these things, consult your doctor or dermatologist for examination and/or tests to determine whether you have common male pattern hair loss or some other condition.

Your doctor will most likely perform a general physical examination as well as an examination of the hair in question and all other areas of hair on the body. Medical history is also very important in the assessment of hair loss, because hair loss can be caused by a wide range of factors, from changing hormone levels to malnutrition.

Next, your doctor might perform a “hair pull test” where he/she takes a sample of about 50 hairs using surgical needle holders. The hair must be extracted briskly so as not to damage the hair root. The sampled hairs are examined microscopically to determine the ratio of anagen to telogen hairs or to pinpoint a disease condition.

How can male pattern baldness cure?

If you do not know the exact cause of your hair loss, then consult your doctor. In many cases, hair loss is temporary and reversible. For instance, hair loss due to malnutrition will generally cease once the diet is corrected. In the case of hair loss due to infections or inflammatory disease, there are a number of effective medications available.

A word of warning: There are about as many hair loss “cures” on the market as there are remaining hairs on your head. The three main male pattern baldness cure are:

Prescription Medication

Prescription medication available today indirectly prevents DHT from building up in the scalp’s blood supply and damaging the hair follicle. Clinical trials demonstrate that the drug helps prevent hair loss, may promote hair growth, and is generally well tolerated.

Topical Minoxidil

Minoxidil was originally developed as an oral drug to reduce blood pressure. Researchers recognized this drug’s potential as a hair loss treatment when individuals taking minoxidil developed spontaneous hair growth. Now, minoxidil is available in a topical liquid form to rub into the scalp. It is a well-tolerated therapy with minimal side effects, and there is some evidence that it can promote hair regrowth in certain individuals. However, this treatment is not for everyone; studies have shown that minoxidil is most effective for men who are less than 30 years old and who have a bald patch that are less than 10cm across.

Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation involves the removal of strips of skin containing active, healthy follicles from the back of the head, cutting them into small “plugs”, and replanting them into the bald areas of the head. Transplants involving two, three or four follicles at a time generally result in a more naturally regrowth pattern. The newly transplanted follicles think they are still on the back of the head, an area that is naturally resistant to androgenic alopecia. Of course, hair loss in the non-transplanted area can continue creating the need for more procedures; alternatively, after the transplant other forms of medical treatment can help prevent continued hair loss.

How To Stop Hair Breakage In Women

Here is a summary of the current hair problems and advice on how to stop hair breakage for any woman who wants healthy looking hair again.

Every woman knows that lovely hair is a vital part of her attractiveness. But today many mistreat their hair. They sleep with it set on bulky rollers, style it too often with lotions and sprays, over-tease and overwork it.

HAIRSTYLES are individual and becoming, but more and more women are troubled with hair damage, dull hair, brittle and broken hair, thinning hair. It is time for a good, hard look at what women are doing wrong and what they should be doing right if they want healthy, gleaming hair. Many women ruin their hair by doing too much to it. Others cause temporary or even permanent damage by neglect of persistent, possibly serious, hair and scalp conditions.

Over-Teasing The Hair:

Hairdressers agree that many women are over-teasing their hair, and over-teased hair is always dull, especially when it is allowed to remain in its matted state from day to day. Some women hate to brush the set out; instead, they gently smooth the hair over the teased sections. Fortunately, the remedy for this kind of dull hair is an easy and obvious one: Stop teasing and start combing.

Some hairdressers blame the use of beer as a hair setting lotion for the prevalent dull hair look. Misuse of hair spray can also dull the hair. Always hold the dispenser eight to ten inches away, so that you don’t overdose the hair. Improper use of shampoo can dull hair. Thorough rinsing of the shampoo is important; any residue will cause dullness. To rinse thoroughly, hairdressers use a hose spray. You can use a spray of this kind at home, attaching it to the tap. Hold it with the teeth of the spray close to the head and flood the scalp with water.

Naturally dry hair has a tendency to be lusterless to begin with. Don’t shampoo dry hair too often once a fortnight is quite sufficient if you’re having trouble with your hair. Use a mild, bland soap. If your problem hair is oily, you can shampoo it once every five to seven days, using commercial shampoo. Coarse hair can be shampooed more often than fine, silky hair.

Regular massage will help, too; lightly rotate fingertips over the scalp twice a day for at least five minutes. Many hairdressers will massage a conditioning agent into your hair before setting it. You can do this at home, and between shampoos, to give it sheen.

Overuse and misuse of home permanents and coloring products can dry and dull the hair. All hairdressers urge regular treatments to recondition hair that has lost the “look of life.'” A cream or lotion conditioner also should be used at home.

Whatever treatment is given, be sure that it is one that does not require three or four soapings to remove the conditioning agent, as a hot olive oil treatment would. This only nullifies the treatment.

Vigorous Brushing:

Hairdressers cite many causes of brittle, broken hair. Among them, often in combination, are sleeping on rollers, brushing fine hair too vigorously, over-teasing, over-tinting, and a general over manipulation of the hair.

Over-teasing and carelessness in combing out teased hair can cause more damage to hair than just the familiar split ends. These can be snipped off the next time a woman visits her hairdresser, but teasing and the other practices mentioned above can cause serious damage to the hair shaft. If the shaft is weakened and torn, hair has to grow out completely before the damage can be undone.

The beehive fashion of recent years has led to trouble when it is left too long a time without combing. The beehive hair no longer in style, introduced over-teasing of hair.

Hairdressers claim that it is impossible to achieve the height and width women are now accustomed to without some teasing. But it ran he done carefully. If you insist on occasional teasing gee your hairdresser to show you how to do it with a minimum of breakage.

If a hairdresser advises you not to tease your hair, follow his advice. Ask him to give you a hairstyle that won’t require teasing, or get a small, lightweight hairpiece that can be applied under your own hair to give your style height.

Women punish their hair by altogether too vigorous handling. When you shampoo your hair, don’t scrub it. Treat it as you would your finest cashmere sweater, gently “squeezing” it clean. After rinsing thoroughly, wrap it tightly in a towel. If you use a home drier, use one that can be regulated against overheating. Medium heat is best.

Using Broken Combs:

Broken combs can damage hair. Always use clean comb. If hair snarls or mats, use one with large, smooth rounded teeth. The moment even one tooth breaks off discard the comb; you’ll snap off hairs if you don’t.

Hair brushing habits should be re-examined, too, if you’re having trouble with hair breakage. A natural bristle rush is safer, because the ends of the bristles are rounded and don’t damage the hair. But bristle brushes are expensive, so you can compromise by using a nylon brush, but use it very gently. Too vigorous brushing will cause the hair to break off.

If hair is baby fine or in a poor condition, some hairdressers suggest that women stop brushing. For normal or coarse hair, brush with sheen. If you have been brought up to believe that you have to give one hundred licks every morning and every night you can forget that advice.

The surprising truth is that gentle massage of scalp twice a day for few minutes will do a good job of the work brushing does and stimulates circulation in the scalp.

How To Stop Hair Breakage

Improper Use of Hair Rollers:

Hair rollers improperly used are a major cause of hair damage. Winding the hair toe tightly on to rollers, pulling it too hard from the scalp, creates too much tension and weaker hairs snap. Have your hairdresser show you how to wind hair to do the job but not exert undue pull on the hair shaft.

Sleeping on rollers is particularly damaging. Hair breaking friction is created as the taut hair is rubbed between rollers and pillow. Wire-meshed, stiff-brush, or flip-on rollers are particularly brutal to hair.

Hairdressers suggest that women set their hair before retiring; then use a hair dryer and remove the rollers and clips. If you do this, tie a net over the hair and don’t brush out the set till morning. Another solution is to get up a bit earlier in the morning and set your hair.

Home Permanent Waving:

Home permanent waving can cause breakage when women wind their hair too tightly and compactly on the curlers. This causes damage not only because of tension but because the waving lotion and the neutralizer are prevented from circulating freely through each strand of hair.

If you plan to give yourself a home permanent, allow the old permanent to grow out completely or have the ends cut off. Have the hair shaped if it has grown bushy. Before using a home permanent product, read the manufacturer’s instructions completely. If end papers are specified, be sure to use them. Use the type of curlers recommended; never old ones that you have from a kit you bought years ago. Try a test curl, especially if your hair is lightened or color treated. Wind your hair on the curlers securely but not too tightly.

Hair Coloring Products:

Hair coloring products must also be used carefully, following the manufacturer’s step-by-step instructions. When hair is to undergo a drastic change, there is no doubt that a professional colorist should do the job. Often the natural color must be lightened before the new color can be used. This is not a do-it-yourself operation.

Temporary and semi-permanent coloring can be handled at home by women who exercise caution and follow directions carefully. Before using any hair-coloring product a woman should make a preliminary skin patch test, whether at the salon or at home, to be sure that she is not allergic.

Reapplying color too soon to touch up permanently tinted hair is a mistake. This is called “‘overlapping.'” Any lightening agent, improperly used, will weaken the hair shafts, so it is important to avoid overlapping. Apply fresh color only where needed.

A cotton tipped swab makes a good applicator for touch-ups at hairline or part. Shun “home brews” of peroxide and ammonia. If an applicator or brush is recommended for the product you use, follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully. Always use the same hair coloring product that you used originally. When semi-permanent colorings are used, avoid color buildup by waiting until most of the color from previous applications has faded with time or been washed out with a number of shampooing.

A great deal of damage is done to hair with “home brews” of peroxide, household ammonia, and a dash of lemon juice. Repeated use to this concoction will leave hair as dry as baked straw and also will cause scalp irritation. Manufacturers of hair lighteners make sure their products contain conditioning agents such as lanolin.

Hairdressers report that some women attempt to straighten their hair at home, using a kit designed to permanent wave the hair. The waving lotion is applied, but then, in a reversal of the waving process, the hair is combed down harshly in an attempt to straighten it. This is abusive treatment even for the strongest hair. Since there are no instructions for straightening hair in the home wave kit, the result is broken, brittle hair. Leave hair straightening to the professional hairdresser.

Other Reasons:

The incidence of thinning hair and even of baldness does seem to be increasing. Dermatologists as well as hairdressers are giving more and more attention to causes, effects, and treatments. Some hair loss is natural for a woman. New hair comes to replace it and there is no cause for alarm. But many women are losing their hair through abusive treatment. Some of the things that cause hair breakage also cause it to fall out; pulling a comb through over-teased hair, sleeping on hair “tensed” in rollers.

When very serious hair loss occurs, hairdressers suggest that you rest your hair from color treatments, permanents, and even regular hair sets. Shampoo it no oftener than is absolutely necessary, using a good commercial shampoo or a prescription shampoo from your doctor. Stop using rollers altogether. Set your hair in standup pin curls instead. If necessary, have your hair cut in a style that is suitable for this kind of simple setting.

Ponytail:

Every hairdresser has seen the results of pulling the hair back tight in a ponytail or bun receding hairline, a balding spot under the place where the ponytail is secured, damage to hair follicles that may be permanent. Securing the ponytail with a rubber band breaks the hair.

Dandruff:

Dermatologists have differing opinions about dandruff, especially in its relation to hair loss. The condition called seborrheic dermatitis, in which crusty dandruff is accompanied by redness and inflammation of the scalp, may do permanent damage to the hair follicles. If a woman has this condition she should consult a dermatologist without delay.

A slight case of dandruff should not be allowed to grow worse. In this connection it is reassuring to know that much harmless scalp flaking is mistaken for dandruff. The skin on the scalp of every healthy person flakes or sheds daily. And when shampoo is not thoroughly rinsed out of the hair, but is left on the scalp, it will dry the scalp and induce dandruff-like flakes.

For the normal, everyday scaling of the scalp, no medication is needed. For slight cases of dandruff, in which flaking is accompanied by a degree of itching, use a shampoo made to control the condition. Be careful not to scratch at your scalp with fingernails or a comb to dislodge the scales. Brush them lightly from your hair before shampooing.

Try not to worry your hair habitually with your fingertips or comb, or brush it excessively whenever it gets ruffled. Don’t let facial cream or lotions invade it with their added emollients. If severe hair loss occurs, see a doctor at once.

Hairdressers have noted sadly that too many women go on secretly worrying about their hair while continuing to torment it. They seem to take the attitude that if they ignore a hair problem, it will go away. It won’t. But the hair itself may.
