Coconut Oil Pulling for Gum Disease & Teeth – Does it Work?
Whether oil pulling for gum disease is effective or not is a tricky thing to say. Oil pulling is a traditional folk remedy from Southeast Asia that is picking up traction these days as a natural solution to the ravages of bad breath. Oil pulling is considered good for gum disease such as gingivitis and receding gums. Following the ayurvedic medicinal traditions of India, the essential concept behind oil pulling is extremely simple: before you have your breakfast or drink your coffee, pour out a spoonful of oil, swish the oil in your mouth without swallowing it, spit the oil out, and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater.
How to do oil pulling correctly?
While the core concept is simple, the execution does have some specific criterion to be aware of. While ayurvedic is sufficiently mysterious or enigmatic to westerners, it is at its core a practice of natural wellness, meaning that the techniques and requirements to practice oil pulling do not require anything special, despite what often can be read online. The first major consideration is the type of oil to use. The oil used for oil pulling needs to be either sunflower oil, sesame oil or coconut oil. These are the only three oils that are recommended for use, and therefore are the only three types that you would wish to consider. Among purists, the best oil for oil pulling is coconut oil and therefore oil pulling with coconut oil is what you should do. In addition to that, you will want to ensure that there is nothing added to the oil; flavorings, even organic herbs and spices, are not acceptable.
Secondly, the time of day is important. Purists, again, recommend that oil pulling be done primarily in the morning, to start your day, when your stomach is empty and you have not yet have had anything to eat or drink. Fringe school of thought suggests that any time you have gone without food or water for at least four hours is acceptable, but most tend to agree, due to the time investment involved, it is best to oil pull strictly in the morning.
Thirdly, and finally, a proper session of oil pulling requires that you are swishing the oil in your mouth for a period of no less than twenty minutes. If you are not able to dedicate the time to properly coat your mouth and let the oils do their work, you will not want to try oil pulling.
Oil pulling for gum disease – Does it actually work?
While there is no hard evidence that directly proves a benefit to oil pulling, there have been some studies, and plenty of anecdotal evidence, that oil pulling can reduce plaque, gingivitis, halitosis and other periodontal diseases to some degree. What is most important, however, is that there is no data done that indicates that there is harm that comes from oil pulling. Avoiding the spiritual or cultural component and focusing only on the science, it stands in a dubious place, but nothing has indicated it is harmful, and there is some soft science to support the idea of how the oil can clean the teeth and gums.
As with any remedy, whether it be natural, synthetic, homeopathic, scientific or folk, your mileage may vary as far as the benefit you see from oil pulling, but as in all things, especially something as relatively inexpensive as oil pulling, it never hurts to try, and see if it works on your specific case.

How to Make Homemade Antibacterial Mouthwash
Nowadays do it yourself items are common enough to now command their own acronym. DIY is a philosophy of being that extends from everywhere to pet food to home improvement, so it is not surprising to find it making it’s way into our bathroom cleansing rituals. Homemade antibacterial mouthwash is officially taking strides to become ‘a thing’… but why? What mysteries lie at the bottom of this DIY mouthwash barrel?
How to Make Homemade Antibacterial Mouthwash
Actually making your own natural mouthwash is not nearly as difficult as it may sound. While there is a definite art to making sure you are not brewing what amounts to a minty alcoholic poison, it is more pain in the lines than it is Picasso.
Various homemade mouthwash recipes and Al-chemical schema exist to distill the process of this distillation, but the essential process stays true to a core:
Take one part water, one part cleansing agent, one flavoring agent, mix, shake and use.
The cleansing agents run a full gamut from:
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Vinegar
- Rum or vodka.
They, whichever chosen, all serve the purpose of the cleansing fire for your mouth, burning, dissolving or otherwise eliminating the pesky bacteria that necessitated the creation of mouthwash in the first place.
As you can imagine, the flavor of a cleansing flame is not particularly pleasant, particularly when the particulars include the oh so appetizing components of baking powder of vinegar. While there is a market for such… potent a taste, most people add a flavoring agent for the purpose of making it more palatable when swishing and spitting or swallowing, per one’s predilections. This is marked improvement over over-the-counter mouthwash, where your options are mint and… well, mint. Most flavoring agents come in the form of essential oils, as they tend to provide the quintessential flavor of what you’ve chosen, whether it be cinnamon or peppermint or eucalyptus, and the beneficent qualities of essential oils themselves.
The process is simple and inexpensive, hence their accessibility and therefore their popularity. Beyond that, of course, there are some benefits that home brewed mouthwash bring to the table compared to conventional mouthwash that aren’t purely fiscal.
The biggest thing lies in the difference between an active ingredient and an ‘inactive’ ingredient. Essential oils are chock full of active, beneficial ingredients, while over the counter mouthwash tends to favor the artificial inactive ingredients, favoring not so their beneficial qualities and more so their preservative qualities.
While the science varies widely as to how bad these preservative and inactive ingredients are, the old adage of ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, comes to mind, and while nothing can be proved conclusively, there is something to be said when various, if conflicting, reports all report negative effects of the inactive and artificial. Baking soda neutralizes the odors in your mouth, rather than just covering them up.
Summary
Ultimately homemade antibacterial mouthwash is easy to make, much more customizable to your palate and extremely inexpensive, so the cost and flavor conscientious consumer would be well advised to consider the option of homemade mouthwash, as its creation is easy, and its advantages are many.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches in Apartments for Good
How to get rid of cockroaches in apartments begins with DEFENSE. Cockroaches are scavengers. They have adapted to survive without food for long periods of time. But they need water often. Unfortunately for humans, we tend to keep food and water in relatively the same place. And this makes a great opportunity for cockroaches (and they thank you).
“Insecticides are most effective in controlling cockroaches when combined with sanitation and exclusion practices that limit the cockroach’s ability to establish or reinvade; chemical control alone will not solve the problem.” – University of California
Clean Everything
Cockroaches are going to be looking everywhere. So everywhere in your home that you bring or have brought food must be cleaned thoroughly. They will find the crumbs. If possible, only eat in one room from now on until you have eliminated the threat. This will make your life easier knowing which rooms you have to pay special cleaning attention to before going to bed every night.
Bathrooms are next. Clean under the sinks. Make sure your pipes are not slowly leaking. Get them fixed if they are because this could be a potential watering hole for those cockroaches. Also, make sure the opening in the wall, if your water pipes go into the wall some go into the vanity, where your pipes enter is sealed properly. There should be no gaps around where the pipe protrudes. If so, get an enclosure piece to put around it or pick up a bottle of insulation spray foam and fill it in.
Next is the kitchen. This is most likely ground zero for cockroach activity. Empty all of your shelves and cabinets. I’m serious. Remove all the food storage items, cans, pots, pans and dishes. Clean and disinfect all shelves and cupboards with a proper detergent solution, I like to use white vinegar (I’m not a big fan of chemicals) but you can get bleach too or whatever else your store has that will do the trick.
Buy shelve or wall liners. I got mine from the clearance bin at the local hardware store for 2 bucks each. And make sure to get only white liners, I’ll tell you why in a minute. After you cleaned thoroughly, lay down your liners. Cut them so that they cover every inch of your shelves. Now you can put everything back. Next, focus your attention to your stove and refrigerator. The crevices underneath, on top and on both sides. If you can, gently move your refrigerator so you can properly clean underneath. Same with the stove or oven. If you have a toaster, clean it and store it somewhere. Don’t use it for a while. Toast is great but the risk of dropping crumbs is not worth it.
Seal your home
Take a walk around the outside of your property. Look at your front door. Take notice of the space at the bottom and sides where it should fit snug against the frame. Are there spaces and gaps? If so, you will need to correct this with weather strips. The weather stripping for the bottom of the door is most important. Making sure the bottom has no gap is essential. You will have to remove the door from the hinge to install the bottom stripping correctly. Remember, cockroaches don’t need more than 1/16 of an inch gap to gain entry so its best to give them no room to enter. That is exactly what I did. The sides and top of the door frame are next. These are easier to do as it’s just a matter of peeling apart the adhesive covering from a rubber strip and pressing onto the door frame.
Next, take a look around your window frames on the ground level. There maybe gaps where the frame meets the house siding. You can also use the spray foam to fill these in or use caulking. Look at the rest of the house and fill in cracks or crevices. If you have water valves on the outside, like for a garden hose, make sure the pipes that lead into the building are sealed also and make sure the garden hose isn’t leaking. If cockroaches can’t get inside, then they will try to stay as close as possible to your home, their main food source. I suggest you replace your mulch, if you have any around your home with gravel.
Cockroaches tend to find harborage, or places to live, at the base of the home or basement but usually in crevices where they can physically feel a material on top of them. They like that snugly feeling I guess. Check the area where you keep the garbage and recycling. Clean these areas frequently with bleach or ammonia or white vinegar. Make a habit of raking the leaves up when they fall. Standing leaves will hold in moisture from the rain and provide a temporary harborage for cockroaches. And last but not least, be careful to watch what you bring into the house. I once picked up the morning paper from the front lawn, went back inside the house, turned the paper and the plastic bag it was held in upside down to release the newspaper and a cockroach fell out. I flipped out!
Now let’s talk OFFENSE
ITEMS NEEDED
- Boric Acid Powder
- Sugar (powdered or granulated)
- ADVION® or MAXFORCE® bait stations and gels
THE ART OF WAR
Ok, now that we have our weapons, let’s get started. The boric acid powder I recommend comes in an ideal pourable applicator bottle. The bottle will also not be filled to the top when purchased. I want you to fill the rest of the bottle with the sugar, leaving only about an inch or two of empty space. Shake up the bottle. We want to make sure we mix the two contents thoroughly. When the roaches eat the mixture, they will determine if its poison or food. The sugar will assure them its food while the boric acid will kill them.
Walk around the outside of your building pouring a little puff of the powder whenever a potential entrance for roaches maybe be found. Pay attention again to the door entrances, windows and garage doors. Any cracks in outside walls near the ground should get filled with some powder. Around the perimeter of garage doors is a definite entrance for roaches and the powder should be applied on both sides. You should clean up and reapply the powder solution every two to three months. The boric acid solution is effective all by itself. But it takes time. How much time? Well, you will see a reduction in a few weeks or sometimes in a few months. Eventually, as a year or two pass by we will finally feel cockroach free. But we can’t wait months or years now can we?? No!!Now we need introduce our next weapon of mass roach destruction. This will shorten your timeline to being roach free.
I personally used the ADVION® brand of cockroach bait but you can also use the MAXFORCE® brand as well. ADVION® is made by Dupont™. MAXFORCE® is made by Bayer™. They both have as their main ingredient a poison that is similar to each other. They both don’t only kill cockroaches when ingested but it will also kill cockroaches that eat those dead cockroaches or the feces of the cockroaches that ate the poison. These are remarkably effective products exponentially increasing your kill rate. The cockroaches eat this poison and go back to their harborage. They will die about 3-5 hours after ingesting the poison. The other cockroaches will eat him and they will die and the cycle will continue.
“Study shows single insecticide application can kill 3 cockroach generations” – Purdue University
These products are really amazing! Now we can expect to see a major reduction in a few days to a few weeks instead of months and years. First take the bait stations and place them in corners on the inside of your place, around the outside perimeter of the house, under the refrigerator, in the garage and under the kitchen sink. Place a bait station everywhere you think they can enter your place or where you have seen one. Remember, cockroaches travel along where the floor meets the walls. Next let’s apply the gel. The gel comes in a tube that is similar to a calking gun. Point, aim and shoot. This gel should be applied where the cockroaches enter your home and especially in the tight crevices both inside and outside. Apply the gel in a droplet like fashion. Around 3-5 droplets every 6-12 inches apart. I also lightly dusted the gel droplets with powdered sugar but you don’t have to, the gel works great all by itself. I applied it on both sides around the garage door openings and in the weep holes around my property. Clean this up every 2 months and reapply. (Although I doubt you will need to.)
For the cockroaches that won’t eat this poison, the boric acid will work anyway. We just need to make sure the boric acid is applied in the right areas. Because even if the cockroaches don’t directly eat either poison, they will walk through the boric acid and bring it back to the harborage. There they will groom themselves, ingesting the boric acid as they clean it off of themselves. Follow these instructions and you will have peace of mind and be cockroach FREE!! Good Luck!

Winter Vomiting Bug, Minnesota – New Strain Of Norovirus Has Entered Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) confirmed the first outbreak of the GII.17 Kawasaki strain was reported in Minnesota last week, with “sporadic” instances of the illness having initially appeared earlier this year. MDH has investigated more than 20 outbreaks of norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, in the state since the beginning of September. Whether the new strain will lead to more norovirus cases this year remains to be seen, but MDH admits it is definitely a possibility and is urging people to take precautions to limit its spread.
“Every few years, a new strain of norovirus emerges and causes many illnesses. We don’t know yet if this new strain will lead to an increase in the number of outbreaks reported, but it could,” Amy Saupe, a foodborne disease epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), said. “If we’re meticulous about washing our hands and handling food properly, we may be able to limit the impact.”
Norovirus can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, body aches, a general run-down feeling, and a mild fever. Symptoms typically begin 24 to 48 hours after swallowing the virus, and usually last one to two days. The virus passes from one person to another by the fecal-oral route. That means the virus comes from the feces or vomit of people who are sick or were recently sick, and can make someone else sick if they get the virus in their mouth and swallow it. A tiny amount of virus can make someone sick.
“Fecal-oral transmission sounds gross, but it’s important for people to understand that they may have gotten their norovirus from food, and that they could pass the virus to others by handling food, even after their symptoms are gone,” Saupe said.
The best way to stop spreading it, therefore, is by thoroughly washing your hands before handling food or eating – and to prevent getting it, try and avoid eating food prepared by someone who is ill, or has recently vomited or had diarrhea.
People should always wash their hands before eating and not eat food prepared by someone who is ill with vomiting or diarrhea. If someone in the household is sick with vomiting or diarrhea, have them use a separate bathroom, if possible. Clean surfaces with soap and water and sanitize with a bleach solution to kill any norovirus that was spread to bathroom or kitchen surfaces. Launder soiled clothing in hot water promptly. Wash hands after helping children in the bathroom or touching surfaces that may have vomit or feces on them.
Thorough handwashing includes washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, rinsing under running water, and drying with a towel. Hand washing helps remove norovirus and other germs from hands.
Other tips include:
- If someone in your household is sick with vomiting or diarrhea, have them use a separate bathroom, if possible.
- Wash your hands after using the toilet.
- Clean surfaces with soap and water and sanitize with a bleach solution to kill any norovirus that was spread to bathroom or kitchen surfaces.
- Promptly wash soiled clothing in hot water.
- Wash your hands after helping children in the bathroom or touching surfaces that may have vomit or feces on them.
People can report suspected outbreaks of norovirus illness – or other food-related illnesses – to the MDH Foodborne Illness Hotline at 1-877-FOOD ILL (366-3455). For more information about norovirus, visit the MDH website at Norovirus Infection.

Can’t Get Rid of Heartburn? – Home Remedies to Get Rid of Heartburn Naturally
The fact that you’re reading this article explicitly means that either somehow you are concerned with having heartburn attacks or, you are a person suffering from heartburn and wants to delve deeper into the more natural and economical side of dealing with heartburn… well you’ve just gone to the right spot! Home remedies for heartburn have already existed ever since our great, great grandparents have met! There are certainly a lot of home remedies for heartburn but let’s tackle the most important and practical ways of relieving heartburn.
First off—avoid triggers
Don’t be stubborn because heartburn won’t give up on you… it’s the other way around. You have to give in to its demands because in the long run, it’s your health which is at stake. Triggers may be as simple as a cup of coffee, a sip of your favorite carbonated drink or even a stick of cigarette. These products have been known to cause the abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter leading to heartburn… and avoiding them is one of the most effective home remedies for heartburn. It may also be beneficial to keep your shelves stocked with herbal tea and consuming it at first signs of heartburn, herbal tea has been known to sooth the symptoms of heartburn.
Chew Slowly
The next most important home remedies for heartburn is to chew slowly and swallow smoothly. When we try to eat a meal in a hasty manner, chances are we do not chew our foods properly, thus it will enter our stomach in a large size. The larger our food is, the more acid is released to break it into smaller parts. When our stomach becomes full of acid, it will have the tendency to reflux and present as heartburn.
Allowing the foods to settle into your stomach and be digested fully before lying down is another hit in the list of effective home remedies for heartburn. By letting food particles settle and by not immediately lying down, you lessen the tendency of your food particles to backwash into the esophagus. Now that you’ve taken an hour or so standing and walking around, you may lie down—BUT, make sure your head is higher or more elevated than the level of your heart and legs. This defies the gravitational pull that may lead to reflux of food particles.
Now let’s get to the meat of the article, the natural remedies that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Why head over the the pharmacy and spend money when you can remedy your pain from home.
Baking soda
Baking soda mixed with water has been very effective in treating acid reflux and heartburn, it’s an “oldy” but a” goody”. Dissolving two teaspoons of this powder into a glass of warm water is a proven remedy for heartburn. When you start to feel the rising of that warm acid, counter it with this mixture to neutralize acidity.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a tasty beverage with all the qualities of vinegar that does a great job of reducing heartburn inflammation, if you don’t have any store bought apple cider vinegar then you can simply add some regular vinegar to about 12 ounces of water and a touch of honey (optional, for taste) and achieve basically the same result just lacking the taste.
Fresh ginger
Fresh ginger mixed with water and drank during your meals can really help you fight off the symptoms of heartburn.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera juice is also considered one of the most effective home remedies for heartburn relief. A glass of aloe vera juice will soothe the esophageal areas which have been irritated by acid and will also help heal the damaged tissues.
Licorice
Licorice is also known to lessen the inflammation of the esophagus. Apart from that, licorice inhibits the growth of opportunistic pathogens in the eroded areas of the esophagus and stomach as well as promotes healing of ulcerated portions.
Bananas
Bananas are effective home remedies for heartburn relief as the chemicals contained by banana works like enteric coating—this coats our stomach from the harmful effects of acid. More than that, bananas have antacid effects which counter the corrosive property of the hydrochloric acid.
Garlic
The antibiotic properties of garlic, especially the enzyme Allicin that it contains can help relieve heartburn attacks. When heartburn starts looming in, chew a clove of garlic and momentarily grind the garlic against your teeth. This way, the allicin inside garlic is released from the clove. Apart from this benefit, garlic has also been known to lower down blood pressure and treat bacterial infections that might be present in your digestive system.
Peppermint
Some people have been emailing me telling me that adding peppermint after every meal is effective, I haven’t had the chance to test this method yet however it sounds promising. Simply suck on a peppermint candy after every meal and achieve not only fresh breath but another great heartburn home remedies idea.
Also, avoiding the use of tight fitting clothes especially on the part of your abdomen will lessen occurrences of heartburn attacks.Home remedies for heartburn are not just about what or what not to eat. Treating heartburn should be as holistic as possible and should definitely include lifestyle and dietary changes.
With the numerous types of home remedies for heartburn relief, there is no excuse for you not to be able to find at least one in your home. Heartburn is a debilitating condition when left unmanaged—be sure to manage it with these homemade

Top 10 Foods (And Tips) to Boost Your Immune System Naturally
Colder temperatures, smaller days and the chaos of winter festivities can also mean spells of the cold or flu. It is the perfect occasion to be thinking about your immune system and practical ways to help boost it. Fewer people understand that a healthy immune system begins in the gut. The best way to give your immune system the support it needs is by following a healthy diet, this means loads of whole foods served up as close to their natural state as possible.
Here are some immune-boosting foods and tips that you should take regularly and practice every day so that can keep yourself and your family healthy – and the sniffs at bay.
1. Red Bell Peppers
Move over, oranges: Red bell peppers contain way more vitamin C (roughly three times more). Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that not only helps get rid of a cold or flu, but is essential to preventing it in the first place. Vitamin C increases the production of antibodies and white blood cells, which help fight against infection. Slice them into wedges to use as a dipper for hummus or salsa, or chop them into a salad for additional immune-boosting goodness. (http://ift.tt/13R3BmF)
2. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted with 8-10 oz. water first thing each morning upon waking. This has so many wonderful benefits including boosting immunity, hydration, detoxification and it is fantastic for gut health as well as alkalizing your body.
3. Bone Broth Soup
This is really a hidden treasure. Bone broth soup is not only great for immunity but it is very healing to the gut. This is also very rich in collagen which is great for hair, skin, nails and joints. (http://ift.tt/q46zh4)
4. Cruciferous Veggies
Broccoli, cauliflower, and other veggies within the cruciferous family are fantastic immunity boosters and age reducers. That’s because they create a little bit of sulfur in your gut which draws out toxins like a magnet, taking some of the load off your digestive system and immune system (http://www.blogher.com)
5. Oysters
Oysters are rich in zinc, a trace element essential for the cells of the immune system. Zinc keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth. The Institute of Medicine recommends 11mg per day for male adults, and 8mg for female adults. There are 76mg in just six medium oysters. (http://ift.tt/NZ0X61)

How to Get Rid of a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) Fast & Naturally
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) develops when bacteria or other infectious organisms enter any part of the urinary tract. Urinary tract infections generally develop first in the lower urinary tract (urethra, bladder) and, if not treated, advance to the upper urinary tract (ureters, kidneys). Bladder infection (cystitis) is by far the most common UTI. Infection of the urethra is called urethritis. Kidney infection (pyelonephritis) and ureters infection (ureteritis) requires urgent treatment and can lead to reduced kidney and ureters function and possibly even death in untreated, severe cases.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) can occur in many patient populations: from healthy patients with no medical conditions to patients with multiple medical problems. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes are associated with higher rates of all types of infection, including UTI. Kidney stones can also predispose patients to UTI. Patients with polycystic kidney disease can also get cyst infections. UTIs can affect adults as well as children.
Urinary tract infection is a significant health problem, both in community and hospital – based settings. It is estimated that 150 million UTIs occur yearly world-wide, accounting for $6 billion in health care expenditures.
Urinary Tract Infection Cause:
Most infections are caused by one type of bacteria, Escherichia Coli (E.Coli), which is normally a part of the individual’s own intestinal organisms. An infection occurs when these bacteria cling to the opening of the urethra (tube carrying urine from the bladder to the outside) and begin to multiply. Frequent use of antibiotics for UTIs has caused other bacteria to start emerging as the cause of UTI but E.Coli is still the most common cause responsible for 70% of infections.
Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms:
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is as uncomfortable as it sounds. Symptoms often include painful urination, frequent trips to the bathroom, and a feeling of urgency. Other symptoms may include lower abdominal or pelvic pain and pressure, blood in the urine, milky, cloudy, or pink/red urine, fever, and strong smelling urine. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor.
