How to Make Homemade Antibacterial Mouthwash

Nowadays do it yourself items are common enough to now command their own acronym.  DIY is a philosophy of being that extends from everywhere to pet food to home improvement, so it is not surprising to find it making it’s way into our bathroom cleansing rituals. Homemade antibacterial mouthwash is officially taking strides to become ‘a thing’… but why?  What mysteries lie at the bottom of this DIY mouthwash barrel?

How to Make Homemade Antibacterial Mouthwash

Actually making your own natural mouthwash is not nearly as difficult as it may sound.  While there is a definite art to making sure you are not brewing what amounts to a minty alcoholic poison, it is more pain in the lines than it is Picasso.

Various homemade mouthwash recipes and Al-chemical schema exist to distill the process of this distillation, but the essential process stays true to a core:

Take one part water, one part cleansing agent, one flavoring agent, mix, shake and use.

The cleansing agents run a full gamut from:

  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Vinegar
  • Rum or vodka.

They, whichever chosen, all serve the purpose of the cleansing fire for your mouth, burning, dissolving or otherwise eliminating the pesky bacteria that necessitated the creation of mouthwash in the first place.

As you can imagine, the flavor of a cleansing flame is not particularly pleasant, particularly when the particulars include the oh so appetizing components of baking powder of vinegar.  While there is a market for such… potent a taste, most people add a flavoring agent for the purpose of making it more palatable when swishing and spitting or swallowing, per one’s predilections. This is marked improvement over over-the-counter mouthwash, where your options are mint and… well, mint. Most flavoring agents come in the form of essential oils, as they tend to provide the quintessential flavor of what you’ve chosen, whether it be cinnamon or peppermint or eucalyptus, and the beneficent qualities of essential oils themselves.

The process is simple and inexpensive, hence their accessibility and therefore their popularity.  Beyond that, of course, there are some benefits that home brewed mouthwash bring to the table compared to conventional mouthwash that aren’t purely fiscal.

The biggest thing lies in the difference between an active ingredient and an ‘inactive’ ingredient.  Essential oils are chock full of active, beneficial ingredients, while over the counter mouthwash tends to favor the artificial inactive ingredients, favoring not so their beneficial qualities and more so their preservative qualities.

While the science varies widely as to how bad these preservative and inactive ingredients are, the old adage of ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, comes to mind, and while nothing can be proved conclusively, there is something to be said when various, if conflicting, reports all report negative effects of the inactive and artificial. Baking soda neutralizes the odors in your mouth, rather than just covering them up.

Summary

Ultimately homemade antibacterial mouthwash is easy to make, much more customizable to your palate and extremely inexpensive, so the cost and flavor conscientious consumer would be well advised to consider the option of homemade mouthwash, as its creation is easy, and its advantages are many.
